how I found this book

The Ethical Slut is a book I came across so many times in its first two editions. I read it during high school at first in its second edition and it eventually became a bookish companion of mine during my teens. Shortly after having arrived at Berlin I went to an english bookstore, and buried my nose into its third edition, I haven’t known yet, since I only had the second edition as some sort of a ebook. Since they finally seemed to have fixed their non-inclusive language and revised some of the crucial pages, I instabought it and reread it during the next days.

where I read this book

At a friends place until I finally found a own flat share and in the U-Bahn (where it’s really darn hard to concentrate on reading).

what is it about?

Polyamory. The book reclaims the, often pejoratively used, term slut defining it as a “person of any gender who has the courage to lead life according to the radical proposition that sex is nice and pleasure is good for you”. Though their subtitle is “A Guide to Infinite Sexual Possibilities” the book also covers non-sexual relationship forms such as platonic friendships and self-refers as a guide to ethical non-monogamy.

for what situation is this a good read?

I hardly can imagine a situation where this isn’t a good read, since it shares so many important concepts about sexuality, relationship structres and communication with its reader. But I would recommend it especially for readers during their teens, since it helped me figuring out what relationships I want and how, so it may help others as well doing so.

do I recommend this book?

Definitely, it is one of the few books about polyamory actually being published, and although it is possible to find more updated and more detailed information on countless blogs about ethical non-monogamist concepts as well, it summarizes common approaches to this brilliantly and gives a good start into polyamorist discourses & topics.
